Over the few short days following the storm’s devastating impact on the Texas Coast, the humanitarian response from local and national communities to Hurricane Harvey has been nothing short of amazing. Those who have been displaced by flooding in Houston and Southeast Texas, however, will have a continued need for assistance beyond the overall recovery effort.  Here are just a few ways you can help out your fellow Texans from the capitol city, small or large.

How you can help with hurricane relief:

CASH DONATIONS:

Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund:

– You can make tax-deductible donations online here.

– Or by check or money order mailed to the Greater Houston Community Foundation

American Red Cross:

– Visit redcross.org to make an online donation

– Call 1-800-RED-CROSS

– Text “HARVEY” to 90999 to make a donation of $10

Make your ARC donation go further:

– To double the impact of your contribution, Google is now matching the first $1 million in donations donated through their site to raise a total of $2 million. Contributions go directly to the Network for Good and will then be distributed to the American Red Cross.

HELPING THE VOLUNTEER EFFORT:

Whether or not you can volunteer locally, All Hands Volunteers allows individuals to contribute the relief effort through community volunteer service organization. Visit www.hands.org to see how you can assist those doing vital work to help save lives and give comfort.

DONATING BLOOD:

Blood centers around Texas are all expecting a shortage of blood in the wake of the storm, especially with the closing of donation centers and banks along the coast. Find a local donation center, or check the local Red Cross for upcoming blood drives.

DONATING SUPPLIES:

Austin Disaster Relief Network is organizing donations here in Austin that will be delivered via 18-wheeler at end of the week (in partnership with Tito’s Vodka).  Much needed donation items include: new undergarments and socks (all sizes), new bed pillows, toiletries, new blankets, cleaning supplies, black trash bags, mops, buckets, utility knives, leather work gloves, inflatable mattresses, hand sanitizer, box fans, baby bottles, baby formula, baby diapers.  No clothing please.
