People & Lifestyle

Downtown Austin residents live for convenience and fun; they enjoy the opportunity to walk to and from work and easy ability to stroll through the city at night and on weekends. You’ll find every walk of life here, from young professionals to families to retirees. It’s a business district, but people like to let loose. There are some 9,000 residents living in Downtown Austin, but people say it still maintains that down-to-earth and small-town, friendly vibe that Texans crave.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

If you’re looking to be surrounded by the best food, libations, and shopping spots when you step out of your front door, look no further. Downtown Austin is known for its music, but it’s legendary because of its dining. Head to Lamberts to enjoy amazing barbecue, and stay for the awesome atmosphere (it’s in a refurbished general store) and live music. Le Politique is a bright and cheeky French brasserie with gorgeous, tasty foods like steak frites and roasted chicken (try their brunch!). Fresa’s is undeniably good and just a plain good time. It has a walk-up window where you can order Downtown Austin’s best wood-grilled chicken (get the achiote and citrus chicken) and modern Mexican eats (don’t forget the ice cream for dessert). Health food lovers: stop by Flower Child for yummy salads and bowls. Truluck’s is perfect for your seafood and steak fixings, and of course, we would be mistaken not to include Stubbs barbecue.

Things to Do

While the Downtown Austin area is known for its energetic nature, don’t fret. There are still lots of more low-key opportunities to get outside and get active. Lady Bird Lake is full of endless things to do outdoors. There’s a hike-and-bike trail as well as an extensive boardwalk, which combines lush and urban landscapes flawlessly. Did you know that Austin has the largest urban bat population in North America? See the bats at the iconic Congress Avenue Bridge, located right at Lady Bird Lake.
Of course, there are the classic things to do, too. Learn all about the capital’s history at the Texas State Capitol and visit the Whole Foods World Headquarters (the first location was right here in Austin!). See art at The Contemporary Austin and head to any of the iconic Downtown Austin streets to witness lively entertainment and music. The Austin Downtown Library is pretty cool as well.
