It’s no secret that Austinites love giving back to the community. Volunteer opportunities abound, especially during the holiday season, but sometimes it’s difficult to sift through all those options to find the right fit for you or your family. That’s why we’ve come up with the SEED guide of great ways to volunteer as we gear up for the holidays. Whether giving your time or your dollars, in Austin there’s something to match your needs.

Party with a Purpose: Put your dollars to work while socializing at one of these events benefitting the community.

Put your Time to Work: volunteer your time at one of these upcoming events.

Operation Turkey

This 100% volunteer-based organization started in Austin in 2000 with the delivery of one meal to a homeless man on 6th Street, and it has grown to include more than 15 cities across 8 states. This year, Operation Turkey has a goal of bringing 75,000 meals to the homeless and less fortunate on Thanksgiving morning, and volunteering couldn’t be easier! There’s something for everyone to do—even the kids. Simply show up at one of the Austin-area locations on Thanksgiving morning to help pack or deliver meals. More information about the organization and volunteering can be found here…and you’ll be home in time to prepare your own Thanksgiving feast.

Also taking place Thanksgiving morning, this is a great way to give back while working up an appetite for dinner. Benefitting Caritas of Austin, the turkey trot has raised more than $3M to support the organization’s mission to “end homelessness and provide people with the tools and opportunities to succeed.” If you aren’t a runner yourself, there are more than 500 volunteer shifts that make things run smoothly (pun intended) on race day. More information can be found here.

Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot

What is this odd event, you ask? Why it’s just one of those weird Austin things were a bunch of people dressed like Santa get together in a “convention of Santas.” Money raised during this afternoon soiree goes to Big Brothers Big Sisters to help provide the funding needed to bring adult mentors to kids who need them. This year the event will take place on December 8th. More information can be found here.
