People & Lifestyle

Living in East Austin means a perfectly balanced speed and tempo. The area is bustling with exciting things to do and see but still maintains its cool Texan demeanor. If you like new businesses, boutiques, and restaurants around every corner and want lots of new food and bars to try, this is the community for you. The area is diverse, vibrant, and great for young professionals. This is not to say it’s not a great place for families; East Austin has a wonderful school system with plenty of parks and space for kiddos to roam, tool.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The saying “Keep Austin Weird” was developed to promote small businesses, and the good news is that in East Austin, you can do just that. There are endless (not to mention excellent) places to eat and experience for foodies who are always down for a new adventure. Suerte is a fun and chic spot for Mexican fare and libations that combines traditional and local Texas ingredients (that housemade masa...yum).

Hoover’s Cooking is the most delicious Southern kitchen for lunch or dinner, and Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop is the cherry on top (quite literally—the family-owned ice cream shop is the sweetest spot). Up late? Justine’s is the perfect late-night spot, serving French cuisine (the steak frites are to die for) under low-strung lights that make you truly feel like you’re sitting on a patio in Paris. And of course, no East Austin roundup is complete without the iconic Franklin Barbecue (Aaron Franklin himself was tapped to create a national Masterclass on how to smoke the most mouthwatering Texas-style barbecue!). Get there early—the line grows fast!

The shopping and entertainment are boundless as well. Mueller is a community that not only offers a beautiful collection of colorful houses to live in but also has a farmers market, favorite eateries and clothing stores, and Alamo Drafthouse (fun fact: Alamo Drafthouse started in Austin!). At Saltillo Plaza, you’ll also find leasing opportunities in addition to restaurants and shopping destinations, like Whole Foods (which started in Austin, too). On East 6th Street...there are so many shopping and entertainment options that we’ll leave it up to you to decide where to go first.

Things to Do

It’s no secret now that East Austin is an arts hub. Canopy is a former warehouse-turned-art studio collective that houses studios, galleries, several creative offices, and a café/coffee shop that visitors are encouraged to stop by. For an in-depth experience with art, take an East Austin Studio Tour. Like nature combined with your art? Stop by East Austin Succulents to witness the gorgeous open-air cacti and succulent nursery—they even offer arrangement services! Thinkery is a super fun children’s museum, but it’s also an architectural masterpiece.

And there’s more! If you’re ready for a beautiful and productive stroll, wander through Boggy Creek Farms during their market days for a small-town experience. If you like to get active, Austin Bouldering Project allows you to play and climb in a new, unique way. The YETI Coolers World Headquarters is located right in Austin, which is pretty cool, too. Finally,
discover and learn about the rich culture behind Austin at the George Washington Carver Museum, which pays homage to Austin's African-American heritage—an integral part of the city’s history.
